East Lansing Public Schools
The East Lansing Public School’s (ELPS) mission statement is “Nurturing Each Child, Educating All Students, Building World Citizens.” The Board employs the staff of the schools and makes proposals, and then policies, about the curriculum and programs at East Lansing Public Schools, described in section 2101. Policies require the approval of a majority of the Board’s seven members, who serve 4 year terms and are elected by the district’s electors in the general election of even-numbered years. The Board also appoints a superintendent who is allowed to take action not described by policy if there is interference with the daily operation of the schools in the district. The current superintendent is Dori Leyko and the current members of the Board of Education are listed below. Emailing specific members of the Board is the best way to get in contact with them, and it may be useful to reach out based on the committee they're in, seen below.

Student Representatives

In addition to the seven official members of the Board, ELPS allows for up to two students to participate as advisory members. These may be high school students chosen by the principal and student council serving on one year terms from July 1 to June 30. The student members can participate in deliberations during Board meetings, but do not have voting ability and won’t be allowed to join a closed session when the public is excluded. Currently the Board does not have student members but East Lansing High School students should contact their principal, Ashley Schwarzbek, for more information. Student representatives are selected in the Spring prior to the year they serve on the Board.

2024 Bond Proposal - Safety, Security, and Accessibility
On May 7, 2024, East Lansing voters approved a bond proposal for additions to MacDonald Middle School and East Lansing High School. As stated in the FAQ for this initiative, a bond proposal is something voters can approve to allow borrowing money for improvements, in this case, to ELPS. This proposal will use $23,500,000 to pay for additions that improve the safety, security, and accessibility of the district. Improvements specifically include construction of a new secure entrance to East Lansing High School, additional security cameras and systems in East Lansing High School and MacDonald Middle School, accessibility ramps between floors in both schools, and a new district Administration building along Towar Avenue.
