Online Media Literacy

How to Find Factual Information on Social Media:
It’s more important now than ever to be able to determine which information online is factual and which is misinformation.
-
Some social media influencers have the power to affect voter opinions more than unbiased news sources. On one hand social media enhances global communication and helps people become more informed about current and important news, however, the ease and increase that comes with posting on social media allows for content that sways voters to become more polarized.
Have you ever wondered if a persons’ story was actually true? There’s a simple set of steps to apply to almost every post:
-
If it’s a friend’s story or repost, click on the original post to see where it came from
-
Once the original post is found, look for where the post got its fact, statistic, or general information from - such as a news source cited somewhere in the post. In this case, the original quote came from an NBC interview. That’s perfect, we can go google and look up this interview to make sure the facts match
-
If there isn’t a news source cited, look up a quote on google to see where the original news report came from
-
Once we find the interview online, from looking up keywords from the original post such as “I’m not joking, NBC interview”, we can make sure the information matches.
-
Finally, it is important to make sure the information on one website matches other, non biased news reports. A good way to do this is to click around on some of the other top results websites and piecing the information together to make sure you get the full, accurate picture.

Recognizing Media Bias
Being able to recognize media bias is important because it can distort the information that a reader gets and therefore change the whole story for readers. This can be especially dangerous when it comes to stories on political and social issues.
An easy way to see where some biases in certain news outlets lie is by looking through this media bias chart.

The City of East Lansing’s instagram features times and locations for multiple events around the city, such as city council meetings, community workshops, and many more opportunities for citizens to be involved in
-
The East Lansing Public Library and Farmers Market instagram pages also display times and locations for events, such as writing contests, movie nights, crafting opportunities, and more.
-
The trail of informative accounts doesn’t have to end here … Instagram features a “Suggested for you” based on the accounts you’ve been interested in, which if you click “see all” can direct you to a page of similar local instagram pages and groups
-
Just select one of the instagram accounts from this website and see how many similar local accounts there are! These instagram pages could be a great way to find internship and volunteer opportunities as well.

How Social Media can be Used for Collective Action: Social Media is a Powerful Tool

On February 14th, 2018, a mass shooting occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida, killing seventeen students and injuring another eighteen, marking one of the deadliest high school shootings in US history.
-
The surviving students made it clear that thoughts and prayers were not enough for them - they wanted concrete legislative solutions to the epidemic of mass shootings.
-
With this passion, they created the #NeverAgain movement which sparked mass protests in different states all across the country. From Michigan to California to New York to Florida, millions of young people joined the coalition to fight for stricter gun control.
-
One of the students in the Douglass High School shooting said that because of their protests, they were able to pass stricter gun laws even with a republican legislature.
-
He furthered by saying that because of the new laws passed in Florida because of the shooting, “Florida judges have used the state’s red-flag provisions over 12,000 times”, assuring that tens to hundreds of potential school shootings could not occur.
